[Continued from Reinforcements have Arrived]
"A flicker?" Scott repeated, stopping to look. "Did anyone else see anything?"
Everyone said no. Scott fell silent and drew his weapon. The rest did the same.
"Apparently, the land gets very rocky further on. There are caves and holes all over the place. We'll keep moving. Just watch your step."
They continued on until they came to a valley, strung with sheer stones and pot-holes. The whole area was silent. There wasn't even a breeze. Suddenly, one of the men picked up something off the ground and handed it to Scott.
"It's an emblem," Scott said. "It's from a member of The Guards. The string has been broken."

"Ah, the most likely place for a creature to hide..." Keith said, not particularly to anyone. "Whatever it is that got them can't be very far away from here... unless the soldiers that were attacked survived and managed to get themselves to this location... to hide in one of those caves or something."
After a moment Keith looked towards Scott. "What do you think, Scott? Should we proceed down into the valley and look for caves?" Keith asked Scott, waiting patiently for an answer.

"Indeed we shall," Scott said, creeping down the slope. "Reminton will take two men and check that way," he said, waving his hand vaguely eastward. "The rest of us will check over here." And within moments, Scott and the other soldier vanished over a sharp slope.

"Yes Si-" Keith stopped as he say Scott dissapear. "Hmmm."
Keith looked back at his two men.
"Should we get going sir?" One of the soldier asked.
"That we shall." Keith replied.
With that he started heading slowly down the slope eastward towards the bottom. Once they all reached the bottom Keith looked around. "Now where are these caves..." He muttered to himself.
"Lets get moving, men." Keith said, the soldiers following.

Scott and his men were checking a small alcove they found. Because the light was so bad and the rocks were not particularly reflective, every groove in the stone was a deep shadow. Still, nobody felt as though they were being watched, and there was no sign anyone or anything else was there for some time.
"Sir! Come quickly!"
Everyone rushed to where the man was standing and peering into a small hole. There was a boot there and it was clean, though it had large gashes in it.
"Our boots are double leather," Scott said. "Whatever tore through that must be very sharp. Right, we'll need to find Reminton and inform him, and see if he has found anything, too. Which way did he go?"
"This way, sir," said a soldier, and they went the way he pointed.

Keith and his men continued to look around for any sign or clue of the soldiers disapearence. They wandered on for some time and it was desolate and still, not even the smallest breeze.
Keith called out to his men and they all gethered together. "Anyone seen anything? Like a badge or something?" Keith asked his men.
"No."
"Hmmm."
Keith looked back the way they came and Scott was visable on the horizon, with his men behind him. Keith waved to them.

"Look what we found," Scott said to Keith and the others, and he held out the boot. "It's been lacerated. I'm afraid we're fighting... something of The Enemy. I am also afraid I know almost nothing about his monstrosoties." With a very worried look on his face, he looked around the group. "Does anybody here have knowledge of what may have done this?"
"I don't know it's name," said one, "but I know what did it. They fly, those things, and they have razor claws and metal plates on their head. They're sorta like flying lion goats or... something. I served in a past war and saw one then. It was a terrible creature."
"I hoped it wouldn't come to this," Scott said, looking up at the sky.

Keith looked at the soldiers and then at Scott who was still looking up at the sky. Keith thought about what the soldier said. He wasn't really up for fighting something like this, nor did he want to but it's not like they had a choice.
"So... what do you we do now, Scott?" Keith said, looking at the tops of the valley's cliffs, seeing if those flying creatures were anywhere nearby. "Where do you suppose we look for them first?"

"We don't look for them," Scott said. He was staring at a cliff nearby and then he pointed near the top. There was a shadowed hole there and something was moving around inside it. "A nest? We need to get over there and kill them. It looks like there can't be more than two of them."
Fearlessly, he marched for the cliff. Whether he planned to climb the sheer wall or not was anyone's guess.

"But..." Keith said as Scott walked off towards the cliff. He cought up to Scott and continued, "But how are we going to get up there? Are you suggesting we clime up there while they attack us? That's foolish. We should wait down here and get their attention."
Keith continued to march towards the cliff with Scott and the other men followed behind them.

"Don't be absurd," he said over his shoulder. "I can't climb that. We'll throw rocks or something. Yes, I can see it now. There's only one there right now."
He reached the base of the cliff and picked up a fist-sized rock. Skillfully, he hurled it skyward and it hit the cliff face near the nest. A head poked out and glanced down. It was slender and had a long tangled crest of hair or feathers as well as a plate of what looked like metal over its skull. With a shriek it took to the skies and Scott backed away. He was unusually fearless about it all.
"All right men, ready your swords. Those claws look very sharp..."
The beast circled overhead once and then swooped down, going for Keith, who happened to be a few steps farther away from the rest of the troop. With its claws out, it went to swoop.

Keith saw the creature and quickly ducked in response, swinging his sword up to try and get a hit at it. Missing by a few inches, he got up and watched as it circled them in the sky above. After a moment it went to swoop again, this time at the group.

Scott and the others backed away and spread out, but that made it easier for the creature to pick a target. It grabbed one of them by the shoulders after receiving a decent cut to the leg and picked the man up. It found itself unable to hold its weight and it dropped him about ten metres from the ground.
"Someone help him!" Scott yelled as the monster came down again, this time for him.
Scott ducked to the ground, forcing the creature to fly lower, but as it passed overhead he leapt up and thrust his sword toward it. The sword drilled into its side and it cried out and spiralled into the air.
"Does anyone have a bow or something?" Scott asked as one of them went to help the man who was dropped.

"I have a-" Keith stopped when he realised he left his bow back home. Though he hadn't used it in years it would have been better than nothing.
Keith looked back at the other soldiers, still weary on the raging, flying monster. They seemed frightened and probably wanted to go back to the fort. Keith understood, none of the men in the group were prepared for this kind of action, well, Keith wasn't.
"I have a few small throwing spears," one of the soldiers finally said, running over toward Scott.

Scott took a javelin from the man and spun around, launching it into the air with surprising power and accuracy. It plunged into the leg of the monster and in return it whirled around and screeched, flapping madly. Scott took another spear and felled the beast with a shot through the chest. It fell to the ground like a bag of flour and slammed into the rock.
"There," he said, going to see how much life it had left. He was unusually calm and cool about the whole thing, but then that was typical of him. He acted on prime instincts and knowledge. "Keith, could you take this injured man back to the Fort? We're going to scout around here a while longer."
