Name: Roan Thaddeus Wittaker
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Race: Eastern Human
Class/Rank: N/A
Abilities: Roan is able to identify wild plants that are safe to eat with just a glance at them. This is most likely due to his upbringing on a farm, but even his parents are amazed by his skill in this area.
Roan is quite adept at climbing pretty much anything in his path, be it a tree, a fence or even a brick wall with a precariously balanced group of boxes.
In times of extreme danger, a mysteriously robed figure who Roan calls 'big brother' appears and either saves Roan outright, or at least puts some distance between the danger and Roan, before he vanishes again without a word.
Personality: In a word? Shy. In several words, Roan prefers not to talk with people that he's only just met, especially in a closed space, such as a small room or even a crowded street.
However, after either getting to know a person or meeting them in a more 'natural' environment, Roan becomes a normal, attentive boy who loves nothing more than to hear about other people's travels. He hopes to use that information to decide where he will go after he graduates from the Carson Institute in Phedailin.
Appearance: Roan is a rather ordinary-looking boy. His dirty-blonde hair falls to just below his ears and is usually kept tied back by a simple piece of red cloth. His honey-brown eyes are often unfocused on any specific location, although this does not mean that he is blind or not paying attention. It just means that he is constantly observing his surroundings.
His clothing is also rather ordinary. It normally consists of a simple white shirt and brown pants combination, as well as his trusty brown shoes, which have seen more than their share of travel.
(Although if there is a uniform for the carson institute, he'd wear that most of the time.)
Weapon/Magic: As a fifth year student, Roan has control over all forms of water magic, up to the moderate rank. He did once restrain a person using water, but the shock of unleashing that much power at once has scared him to the point where he chooses not to use anything more powerful than a water projectile for now.
Roan is also able to use some basic wind magic, but as he has only just started to learn about it, even summoning a simple breeze is an accomplishment in itself. His teachers have noted that he possesses quite a bit of potential in this area, but it will take some time to coax that potential out and into the open.
Aside from these skills with magic, Roan also posesses a simple wooden staff that was given to him by his father on the day that he left for the Institute. Only two people have ever tried to take it from him: a teacher, who was promptly bitten and an older student, from whom the staff was snatched back and beaten. In both instances, Roan was sent to the Headmaster, but nobody else has tried taking it from him since.
History: Roan was born to a moderately well off family who lived in Entaro. As he grew up, Roan was constantly wondering his family's fields and climbing anything that was bigger than he was. In fact, his mother is said to have gained her first grey hair the day that she found Roan at the top of a very tall tree. He was only three at the time, but that obviously didn't stop him.
Roan would have been perfectly content to live on his father's fruit farm for his whole life, if it weren't for one fateful encounter at the age of seven.
The Wittaker farm was by no means unheard of in certain circles and there were occasionally thieves wondering around at night. On one particular night, Roan had snuck out of his room to climb trees and enjoy the cool night's breeze. Suddenly, someone snuck up behind Roan and grabbed him!
Before Roan could even utter a cry for help, a robed stranger appeared and defeated the would-be kidnapper with a flurry of fire and water! Without a word, both his rescuer and the kidnapper had vanished.
His parents, who had heard the commotion, came running and found their son completely unharmed. He looked up at his parents and said, "my big brother saved me with magic. Can I learn magic like him?"
Although initially confused (as Roan was their oldest child,) his parents soon agreed and the next year, he was off to the Carson Institute in nearby Phedailin, where he studied dilligently and managed to achieve a decent ranking in his tests. His father would appear on alternate weekends to tutor his son in non-magical studies, such as proper trading behaviour and other things that he thought would be useful for what he saw as his son's future. During this time, Roan rarely left the Institute, because his parents were paying a great deal of money and he did not want to disappoint them.
As time went on, Roan made his share of both friends and enemies. One of the latter swore revenge on Roan for some utterly rediculous reason and as a result, conspired to have the boy kidnapped and shipped far away in the night, so that nobody would look for him until the morning.
As it would happen, Roan had snuck out of his room that night to, you guessed it, climb things. Suddenly, a dark figure appeared, grabbed the boy and threw him onto a wagon after knocking him out.
After a few days, Roan woke up in a secluded clearing with a throbbing headache. Luckily, there was a small group of edible mushrooms growing nearby. After he had had his fill, Roan attempted to recollect what had happened.
"Big Brother must have rescued me...kinda. Well, I'm not going to get back to the Institute by standing here. I think I'll go-wait, where's my staff?" he asked himself as he searched the clearing in a panic, before he realised that his staff was probably still under his bed, where he'd left it.
After he cleaned himself off in a nearby stream, Roan picked a direction and started walking, in hopes that he might find his way home, or at least a place where he can find someone that'll tell him how to get home.
Goals: At the moment, Roan's biggest goal is to get himself back home. He'll work out the rest of his life when he gets there.
