A Day In The Forest

All the men were looking at the light when it exploded into the clearing. The trees and leaves turned white and the water sparkled brilliantly as the intense glow roared. Most of them cried out and covered their eyes as they looked away. Gamner had his knife and, rubbing his eyes with his other hand, he moved forward and tried to cut at her even though she was out of his range. Though the men were disoriented, they were also enraged and had now all drawn their weapons.

After about a minute the light began to fade and the girl was now forty feet away from them and running down the forest path, her hands holding up the bottom of her robe, and her brown hair flowed behind her as she ran.

But her running was in vain as her foot hit a hidden rock underneath the leaves and she fell face first into the road.

It took a short while for the men to realise what had happened. The light dissipated and their target had shifted. They all glanced around. Gamner swiped at where she once stood, thinking she had somehow concealed herself from their vision. Finding only cold air, he moved forward further and cut at the air some more. Then he looked down and noticed her footprints in the dirt leading away from them. Furious, he started into the bushes to chase her with the others following closely behind.
