Okay, this is a strange little scenario I envisioned at one point. But I couldn't really think of a use for it myself and there's no way I could make a character like this insane mage with my current two star rating. But I figured I would put it here if anyone else wanted it. This could be the start of an interesting plot-line.
On a side note, I'm not sure what place in Riiga this would likely be in, but it would either be in some kind of magic academy kind of place, or more likely some kind of hidden secluded place that the local authorities would demolish in heartbeat if they knew what was actually going on in there.
The old mage paced back and forth, the setting rays of the sun came in through only a small window in that room, so that the mage was sometimes bathed in light, other times covered in darkness. He had a bit of quandry on his hands, but on the other hand, he was onto to something.
"There's no way I could ever match the power of some of those other mages out there, no matter how I study or what elements I should focus on. But... what of the relationship between them?" He spoke aloud as he mused to himself.
The thoughts had been inspired by something small and simple. A single flower, half dead, that he had used organic magic to rejuvenate. It had brought to mind questions that he found intriguing.
"The flower drinks in the water, takes nutrition form the earth, and it needs light to grow. All the organic magic does is accelerate the process... but could there be other applications? What if, for instance, one used his water power to bolster the flower, instead of organic power? What if one used the earth to nourish the flower, or used light?" He shook his head, no that wasn't it. "But it would just be wasted, because it all takes time... unless..."
He had it! "Unless you used organic magic to remove the limitations from the process, and you would get... a flower that could drink magic!" Then he paused. "Bah! What good would THAT do? A FLOWER? I might put the water mages in their place, but to what end? I need something capable of moving about and following orders!"
Still this was a start, he had a plan now. "Hmm... but perhaps if I had more specimens to work with, maybe I would gain new insights. Yes..." He cackled as gathered his things together. "Field research is always a nice change of pace... hmm... where to start..."
As he left, the crazy old magician plucked the flower he had rejuvenated from the ground, being careful not to damage the roots too much. He recorded a stunning success in his log-book, and then moved on. But since the flower was in bloom at the time, it wasn't long before a nasty breed of strange, magic resistant weeds started to spring up in his wake.
Err... well that didn't turn out as great as I envisioned, but it has interesting implications, at least.
