Anu quickly scaled the ladder and emerged in a small room that stank of very old food. He held his nose and got to his feet. Though wet and cold, there was an unseen warmth in the air and he took comfort in it. Silently he studied the contents of the room: desks, chairs, worn books, and many empty vials. He discovered the source of the stench as he sniffed one and then turned to Leif for answers.

After scaling the ladder behind Anu Leif paused to wring some of the remaining water out of his shorts with his nose wrinkled at the smell. When he was done he looked to Anu and asked, "What have you got?" as he moved to stand with the younger fighter.
He checked to see if the vials had labels then looked over towards the worn books and scratched his neck as he seemed to think for a moment. "I wonder...." He went over and took a book at random then opened it and stared at the page with a very serious expression on his face. The page had lists of numbers and other things all in neat columns.

"You wonder? What do you wonder?"
He went to see what Leif was looking at and stopped to pick up another book on the way. Unable to make sense of what it said, he closed it and peered at the pages Leif was reading.
"Do you know what it says?" he asked, his voice small and curious. "These vials smell like something, but I don't know what..."
There came a scratching from nearby and a loud, strange noise, like a burst of wind across an untidy floor. Anu turned and caught sight of a door across the room. It seemed just as ordinary as any other door. The light in the room was very low, and it was coming from another tall skylight in the middle of the room. A strange murky crimson glow entered from above, and it made the door handle glisten like gold. Anu looked back at Leif with a cautious expression.

"This one is a ledger, like my uncle keeps for the food. Who eats what and how much... but," He peered at the page and headed over to where the vials were, "These vials are listed here, with names and maybe how much of what ones were given to who, I'm not sure."
Then he heard the noise too and turned toward the door. Then to Anu, with a mirrored expression and a tilting of his head. "An animal maybe? Some kind of guard dog maybe?" He clearly wasn't sure and just guessing.

"A ledger," Anu repeated, looking over all the items with a deep frown.
He turned his head to watch the door again. He stepped towards it and listened. Everything was quiet again. There was suddenly a loud sniff and dust blew in from under the door. A strange odour accompanied it. Anu was fairly certain that it was an animal, as he'd seen dogs do a similar thing when they sniff constantly and then get dust up their nose. He moved closer to the door, wondering if it could smell or hear them. There was a sudden violent scratching and Anu leapt back. It stopped and shuffled about.
"It sounds big," Anu said to Leif. "Do you think it's friendly?" He nodded towards the door again, implying he wanted to open it to find out. After all, they couldn't go back now; they had gotten into the room through an irregular entrance via the ladder and tunnel from the pit of water.
