Leif stopped under the shaft for a moment and looked up it. "Well," he glanced toward the door, "we've got to head up at some stage." Then he moved toward the door and tugged it open, after peeking through the gap to make sure there was no light or anyone behind it.
There was a loud grinding whine from the rusty hinges as Leif hauled at the door. The muscles in his arms, shoulders, back and legs all bunching. "Wonder if this is a sign they didn't bring us down this way." He grunted as he finally pulled the door open.

"I'd say so," Anu said, pushing past Leif to see what was in the room.
There was enough light to get a good idea of what was there. An old wooden desk occupied the centre of the room but there were no visible chairs. Behind the desk was a door and a bookshelf behind it which was almost empty. The room had the sort of smell an old person's home has: the air was old and static and the ground was quite dusty. Anu went to the desk and picked up one paper but it tore in his hand. He picked up a piece that fell to the floor and looked at it carefully.
Then he turned and looked at Leif. "Can you read?"

Leif stepped into the room and came over to where Anu was standing leaning over the younger lad from behind ignoring the fact that his chest brushed Anu's back. "A little. Dad's been teaching me from the school ledger." He said then suddenly turned his head and sneezed. "No body's been down here in ages." He added after wiping his nose on the back of one hand, then he looked at the paper Anu was holding. If the paper held any words he recognised he said them out loud. [heh.. I don't figure reading is a high priority for fist fighters ]

"Lemon? Olive? Liver pr...prickle? Onion? That's food. This is useless." He threw it over his shoulder, almost landing it in Leif's face. He stepped away and turned around. "But it does make me hungry. Do you think it's too unlikely that there is food down here?"
Without waiting for an answer, he went and opened the drawers of the desk, but found nothing edible. He opened the next door without any hassles and was heard rummaging through what sounded like wooden crates in the darkness. If there was food down there, it would either be extremely rotten or a combination of mould and dust.

Leif swatted the paper away from his face and sneezed again.
"Anything useful back there," he said once he had the sneezing under control, "or should we just keep looking for a way out? Maybe go back a bit and try a different direction."
He stepped into the store room and watched Anu rummaging through the crates in the darkness. "If there's any food back there I don't think it'll be any good. Too much dust."

"Yeah you're right."
Anu threw handfuls of dust and powder to the ground and placed his hands on his hips, his eyes scanning the room carefully. Though it was too dark to really see what anything was, he headed into a corner and picked something up. Then he stepped back and gasped, and something ceramic fell to the floor and shattered. He turned to look at Leif from the darkness. There was a distant noise, like a creak or shuffle.
"Someone else is down here," Anu said under his breath, and he ran back out into the other room. It was empty.
He entered the corridor again with Leif and began to creep along what was now old wooden boards, but within moments they simply gave and the two of them plummeted into darkness with a cry. Fortunately, their fall was broken by water, but it was icy cold.

Leif found his way to the surface and spluttered as he caught his breath and tried to touch some form of bottom to the water they'd landed in. He paddled to keep his head up as he looked around, "Cold, like when I fell in a pond one winter." He managed between breaths and slightly chattering teeth.
"Anu?" It was cold and dark, even darker then the passages above so he stayed as still as he could while keeping himself afloat, and listened for splashing sounds what would help him pinpoint where the younger Fighter was.

Anu had plunged in deep, but had found no bottom to the water. He flailed as he tried to reach for the surface, and his feet found something solid but furry -- likely dissolving in the water -- to kick off of. As he drew nearer to the surface, he found he could not swim. As a professional and high ranking fistfighter, he'd never had much time to swim in the sea-like lake near the town. He could reach for the surface, but he found himself becoming very distressed and didn't seem to get any higher.
Then, as he reached out, he felt something. It was Leif's foot. Anu tugged at it but his grip slipped and he began to roll backwards.

Leif felt the tug on his foot and thinking quickly he took a deep breath and duck-dived under the surface of the icy water. He reached down and felt around in the darkness, finding nothing at first he swam down a bit further. This time his hands first found Anu's head, then his shoulder and an arm. Moving a little more he was soon able to wrap an arm around the younger fighter's chest, slightly under his arms.
Hoping that contact would be enough to encourage Anu to grab hold he started to kick and swim his way back to the surface pulling Anu along with. When he did reach the surface he helped Anu into a position floating on his back while helping keep his head up. "I've got you, I've got you. Just try to stay calm and float." He said in what he hoped was a reassuring tone before looking around in the hope of perhaps spotting a way for them to get out of the water.

Anu was used to stressful situations. He followed Leif's instructions and stopped struggling, simply allowing himself to float calmly. As his breathing calmed and he coughed up a bit of water, he began to shiver.
"I c-can float now..." he said, turning his head to look at Leif's dark shape. "I was j-just caught by surprise..."
Leif let go and Anu stood properly in the water. He struggled a little at first to keep his head up but he grabbed Leif's shoulder and this seemed to help. He, too, began to scan the darkness for a way out. The two drifted slowly along and Anu felt something cold and hard. There seemed to be a level stone platform just under the water, but it was better than being in the water itself where the bottom was goodness-knows how far down. He carefully climbed up and found it was a sort of alcove in the wall. Pushing his back to the wall, he pulled his knees to his chin and hugged himself. He was still shaken up from the fall, but didn't say anything.

Leif climbed into the alcove as well. There wasn't much space but that didn't seem to bother him as he snuggled in close to Anu and hugged his knees as well. After a moment he looked to Anu, "You still cold? If you are we could... well share body heat. I've been told that helps."
Until Anu gave an answer on that suggestion Leif just continued to hug his knees to his chest and keep an eye on the younger Fighter.

Anu stared into darkness for a moment, teeth chattering on occasion. Then, from beneath his wet and tangled fringe, his bright eyes darted to Leif, throwing a sharp glance at the boy, and then he looked away again.
"No," he stammered, pulling his knees in a little closer. "I'm fine."
He released a shaken sigh and rubbed his leg for a moment. Somewhere nearby, water dripped and echoed, breaking the eerie silence, yet only to set the hole up for the next moment of silence. Anu stared across the water, trying to perceive anything within the darkness, but there was nothing there. It was like trying to spot clouds in a clear sky. He closed his eyes and squeezed them shut.

Leif moved around in the alcove after spending some time rubbing his arms and legs to warm himself up. He felt around in the dark at the back of the alcove then his hands found something, he was leaning over Anu and he stopped a moment. He looked at the younger fighter quite closely, did he see some of the other boy's hair moving.
"I think there's something back here, there's a draft." He then went back to feeling around without asking the other fighter to move. Leif's head and shoulders soon vanished further back into the alcove. "There's a tunnel or pipe or something."

"A tunnel?" Anu's croaky voice picked up a bit. He waited a moment for Leif to move and then checked for himself. "Yeah. There's a hole here. There's water in it. Where would it lead?" He looked at Leif for answers, but it was no secret that neither of them knew.
Teeth still chattering a little, he got on all fours and began to crawl through it. It was somehow darker than the water room, and colder, and the bottom of the tunnel had water in it; but it felt safer. Finally, there was space to stand, but he only sat up in a squat and peered around, waiting for Leif to follow -- if indeed he did.
"There's a ladder," he said, mostly to himself. "I'm going up."

Leif crawled into the tunnel, it was a slightly closer fit for him and he scraped his shoulders a bit a few times until he got through to the open space with the ladder.
"Ok, I'm right behind you."
He gave Anu time to head up the ladder first then started up himself.
