Whip did not understand Hayden's devotion to Goruden, but he still did what he could to move the debris away. He hoped that Goruden would not be under here, since there was a lot of rubble and it would take way more than the strength that they could muster alone...unless someone joined them in the search.
Suddenly, Whip had an idea. He had once seen someone move a big rock by shoving a pole under it and pushing down! There weren't any poles nearby, but he did manage to find a piece of relatively unrotten wood and with the help of a smaller rock, he managed to get some leverage on one of the rocks. "Come on, move rock!" Whip said.
With a little luck, he'd be able to do some good for Goruden.

Hayden, at first, wasn't sure what Whip was doing. It looked as though he was trying to push the boulder by sticking a piece of wood underneath it and he was upset that he would attempt something so futile while his friend was in danger. But when the boulder budged, Hayden saw how the wood was acting as a lever. Suddenly keen, he went and helped Whip to lever the large stone. It shifted, grated, and eventually slid off and rolled into the wall with a crash. They both paused and listened. The ruins gave no response.
"Will take many time this way..." Hayden mused. He went to stay something else but he froze. Down at his feet, shimmering in the lantern's light, was something metallic. He touched it with his foot. It was cold. As he picked it up he realised it was a piece of cold; a gold coin. He eyed Whip.
"More gold? This from... above us?" His eyes shifted warily to the gaping blackness in the ceiling. Currently, the rubble was a high enough pile to be climbed to get through the hole, but that would mean abandoning their quest to save Goruden. Hayden shook his head and slipped the coin in his pocket. He went back to levering rocks off the heap.

Whip noticed the gold, but he didn't say anything. He was too busy pushing off rocks to see if Goruden was under the rubble. He was so focused on his task that he didn't even stop to think that there might be something lurking above them.
"Keep digging, must find," he said to himself over and over. Whip couldn't see much from where he was, but he knew that reducing this pile of rubble to a smaller pile of rubble was an important task. Nothing, not even another one of those nasty bug-things was going to distract him!

Hayden paused for several moments and then took out the gold again. Slipping it between his fingers, it turned it around and around. Noticing Whip couldn't lever the rocks without him, he explained his hesitation.
"Cursed gold? Bringing bad things to this place?" He glanced at Whip and then looked around slowly. Just silence. "Will throw it down the hall, away more from us. Wait a moment." Hayden stood and shuffled out into the dark corridor.
Some moments passed and something large rushed past the doorway, caught in bedaubed light only for a moment. It was far larger, darker, and faster than Hayden, and it was completely silent.

Whip kept digging through the dirt and shifting rocks when he could. As Hayden explained about the gold, he figured that the gold must be cursed, since he could understand that magic was not a good thing and since a curse was some kind of bad magic, that meant it HAD to be really bad. He gave a nod of acknowledgement to Hayden that it was okay to get rid of the shiny thing, for now.
As he half-watched Hayden toss the coin away, he began to think of something. There was definately something familiar about this place, but he couldn't remember what it was, no matter how hard he tried! He shrugged his shoulders and went back to digging. That big guy sure got buried under a lot of stuff. Whip didn't know that this amount of stuff would probably kill Goruden, so he just kept digging.
Unfortunately, Whip was so fixated on his task that he didn't notice the near-silence of the new thing that had gone past them, or the slight breeze that its movement sent around the room. Whatever it was, it would surely have the upper hand if it chose to fight against Hayden and Whip.

Hayden returned and they continued to work at the heap. After a large stone was dislodged and sent rolling against the wall, Hayden stood up straight. For a moment his mouth hung open and then he looked away. A hand and part of an arm protruded now from the rubble, still and -- when Hayden touched it -- cold. Avoiding looking at Whip, he muttered something as he placed stones back over the hand to cover it. He drew a deep breath and sat on the stone floor. Hayden seemed rained of all enthusiasm and didn't act as though he planned on going anywhere. His gaze fell on the lantern, still spluttering, and he absent-mindedly wondered how much longer it would last.
"Gone," he whispered, but everything was so quiet that he may as well have screamed it.

Whip suddenly looked up and jumped over to Hayden. "Gone? What you mean gone? You find Gor...Gor...big guy?" Whip asked as he absentmindedly dug a little into the loose dirt that was around them. How could someone just be gone? Why would Goruden just go and not take them with him?
"Light fading. We go up, or keep digging?" Whip asked. Hayden's leadership had gotten them this far, so he hoped that his new friend knew what they should do next...as for Whip, he'd be happy just to get back to his pile of shiny things and not come back down here!

"Err," Hayden muttered, stumbling over his own thoughts. His moist eyes were fixed on nothing in particular. Mustering courage and stubbornness, he shook his head slowly and wiped his face with the back of his forearm. He then stood, at first a little clumsily, and with power he strode to the lantern, swept it up, and went to the doorway.
"Many lost here," he said as he inspected the nothingness before him. "Can feel it. The air is dead cold. We need to..." He turned and motioned to the hole in the ceiling. "Go up?"
He placed the lantern back down, using his idea as fuel to keep him going, and he heaved one of the support beams up off the ground and against the edge of the hole so it protruded up into shadow. Carefully, he put pressure on it with his leg to see if the rest of the roof and the beam itself would hold.
"Ladder," he said proudly. "You go first? Or?"

Whip didn't understand why they weren't digging any more, but Hayden appeared adamant about getting out of here now. That, along with a few words that Whip didn't understand was all the convincing that the boy needed.
As Whip watched the construction of the ladder, he couldn't help but feel like he'd experienced this before. Still, with nothing else to think about, he waited until the ladder was built and looked around for any other shiny things that he could take back. Alas, there were none, not even a glazed piece of pottery!
Soon enough, the ladder was built. Whip quickly walked up and looked around. They were definately still in the tunnels, but he could see what looked an exit in the distance! It looked like a pinprick on a black piece of cloth from where they were standing, but it was at least it was something like good news!
"Hey! Exit this way! Come!" he said into the inky blackness where Hayden was standing. It'd probably be a trap, but Whip didn't care. If there was even a chance to get out of this section of the caves, he'd take it!

Now excited, Hayden scrambled up the beam and stood by Whip, looking around and trying to adjust to the new lighting. At first he couldn't see anything but then he noticed what had taken the boy's attention. There was a tiny light which appeared to be some way off. He gave a small gasp and immediately stepped forth into the darkness. He got a few steps and then everything turned around. He found himself lying flat on the ground. With a cry of annoyance he sat up and grabbed at his foot.
"Trip on a rock! Argh!"
He looked over his shoulder and searched for the light but he couldn't see it. Carefully, he stood, but there was still only darkness. He moved around slightly trying to find a spot where he could see it. He looked to where he thought Whip was.
"Light is gone?"

Whip would have followed Hayden to the tiny speck of light, if the boy had not tripped over and gotten himself all mixed up. Whip jumped from one rock to another as he checked to make sure that Hayden was okay.
When Hayden asked where the light had gone, Whip was confused for a moment. "Light still over where it was. Turn around! Turn around!" he said as he pointed to where the tiny speck of light still stood, awaiting the two weary adventurers. Whip jumped from rock to rock as he waved for Hayden to follow.
"Come! Come! Shiny light this way!"
