Jakim didn't mean to fall asleep. Laying stiffly under the blankets, he closed his eyes, intending to feign slumber until Kuvre was asleep herself. The events of the day finally caught up with him, however: the adrenaline he'd been running on since coming into sight of the city fled, and feigned sleep became real.
He started awake from the same nightmares that kept him always moving in the forest. Jerking upright with a silent intake of breath, he blinked rapidly to clear his eyes. Slowly, he realized that the reason he couldn't see was that it was nearly pitch black inside Kuvre's hutch. With the nightmare still close in his mind, he waited for his eyes to adjust until he was able to make out the shadows of the table and stool.
Making as little noise as possible, he scooted out from under the bedding on the hutch's floor. He gathered his headband and pouch where he'd left them next to the furs on the floor, then stood and padded on the balls of his feet to the entrance.
The outside torches had burned down to embers, so that very little light intruded in the room when Jakim slipped out under the door cloth. The faintest glow in the sky only hinted at the coming of dawn; otherwise, the still darkness of night settled down on him.
The sense of urgency inside him continued to build. Trying to remember the way Kuvre had led him into the city, he started down the path. Within a few paces he was stretching his legs out into a jog, which just as quickly became a blind run. No longer heeding where he was going, he just ran...
