All the men were looking at the light when it exploded into the clearing. The trees and leaves turned white and the water sparkled brilliantly as the intense glow roared. Most of them cried out and covered their eyes as they looked away. Gamner had his knife and, rubbing his eyes with his other hand, he moved forward and tried to cut at her even though she was out of his range. Though the men were disoriented, they were also enraged and had now all drawn their weapons.

But her running was in vain as her foot hit a hidden rock underneath the leaves and she fell face first into the road.
